I love the Encounter series,
Used this book last year when I travelled to Bangkok. I loved it. Very compact (book fits in your pocket) but filled with great information. Breaks down individual neighborhoods, detailed maps, and lots of recommendations for things to eat, see, shop and do. I’m a fan, I always look for the Encounter books when I travel to foreign cities. Just make sure you get the latest revision for the most up to date information.

Lonely Planet Best of Bangkok,
Not very usefull. Lots of out dated info that has been re hashed over and over. Save you money
Maps are useless, hard to read and limited info

BKK,
Basic guide for opening times and prices; found it to be packed with useful info.
What to see, shop, play or places to eat for the different suburbs of Bangkok.
I agree that the map is useless, but TAT has good ones.
